Understanding social polarization and improving social cohesion | New Partner Resources

The Students Commission of Canada and Humane Canada have recently shared two new resources in order to better understanding social polarization and improving social cohesion.

  • Hearing Unheard Moments: a practical guide to building social cohesion | The Students Commission of Canada

This guide from the Students Commission of Canada aimed to support conversations and activities that help people connect, learn from one another, and build healthier communities together:

"[...] when young people feel unheard, the results can be dangerous, not just for them, but for all of us. [...] Those who felt heard in their early years took positive life choices, contributing to community. Those who felt unheard became a danger to themselves and others. This is a "how-to" guide to being one of those pivotal moments in someone's life."

  • Beyond Promising Practices: Examining Root Causes of Online Radicalization | Humane Canada

This research from Humane Canada is the first known Canadian study examining the link between animal abuse and online radicalization of youth. It highlights "troubling patterns of escalating online violence, exposure to misogynistic and nihilistic ideologies, and the use of animal abuse as an overlooked warning sign within harmful digital environments."

In parallel to these efforts, Humane Canada has developed a series of downloable posters to discuss the connection between animal abuse and interpersonal violence.
